Winter Blues

Is it just me, or is the fact that tomorrow is the 1st of June and the first day of winter depressing? I hate the cold and wet weather and most of all I hate that it seems to be dark all of the time! Anyways I guess there are a few good things that happen in the next three freakishly cold months. I love that June, July and August bring me a lot more football, and hopefully my boys will win plenty more games this season, as well as this there are plenty of netball games left in this season.

Also the next few months will bring lots of planning for the hens party and also my bridal shower. As most of the wedding is planned, it will also bring a lot of hard work to get the wedding bills paid off, hopefully before christmas time. I am also hoping that I will be able to spend a few hours a week at the gym smashing up some fitness! I hate that my fitness has dropped so much after having penumonia. Of course its to be expected, but when you used to run 10km 3 times a week and now struggle to run 1km its pretty diappointing.

Anyways what else is good about winter? I don't think there is much else to be honest, I love September1st! It brings me hope that things are new, and I love that day in October when daylight savings starts!!! Anyways when that day does roll around it will mean that my Hens isnt far away!!!!

The Save The Dates have been sent and hopefully most people will be able to come. I am so excited, Bring on October

The Hens Night

Well this was a detail that up until about 8am today I thought was pretty locked in. But after about the 15th of 20 invitees told me they weren't able to come I decided that a trip to Surfers Paradise wasn't the way to go for a hens weekend. It would have been a fun weekend with theme parks, beach, night markets and my favourite place Planet Hollywood! Dam I hate that they don't have one in Melbs anymore...
So instead I have had a chat with my bridesmaids and have decided the melbourne option to be a more viable option for everyone, money wise it should cost about half the price, it only takes people away from there own lives for 12 hours instead of 4 days and means that everyone who I love can come. well hopefully anyways.

So what are good ideas for hens nights? Pole Dancing? Burlesque? Winery tours? Day Spa? There are so many options! At the moment I am loving the idea of doing a brunch in my home town before we head down to the city, hopefully in a Hummer...but I don't know how much they cost? Or if it'll fit 20 people???

I am loving the idea of a chocolate tour as well and then heading to a yarra river cruise, I went on one a few years back for a Christmas Party and it was great fun! Lots of finger food, lots of drinks, dance floor, and if that fall through I'll be happy to settle for ice skating and KFC at Harbourtown.

So anyone out there reading been to many hens nights? Let me know some ideas?

300 Days to go and its music to my ears

Today is May 27th and that means there is 300 days until the wedding!!! Its coming up unbelievably quickly. Firstly today I would like to apolygise about my post today as I just came off a night shift I have only had about 2.5 hours sleep. Often I bring song lyrics into my posts and thats because I love that music can explain a feeling, a thought, and a memory, so many sonys are so special to me for a number of reasons and thats why I believe music and entertainment are important to a wedding.

These days music and entertainment play an important role, and every couple needs to consider music for both the reception and the ceremony. Firstly consider the style of your wedding, if you are having a church wedding then I would suggest the possibility of an organ or string quartet. Whatever your tastes I think its a detail that needs to be carefully planned. Also it is good to not that your guests will cover a range of age groups and tastes! Also remember you dont want the music so loud that your guests can't have a conversation.

The Ceremony! We are opting for a more fun and laid back ceremony, our song choices will be reletively modern for the arrival of the guests, as for when the bridesmaids and myself walk down the aisle, I won't be dancing down the aisles but I will be pretty close to it I think. Check out the awesome couple who danced down the aisle to Chris Browns Forever. What do you think?

As for the reception there will be a large array of music on my playlist ranging from the 60's through to now, all fun songs, most with an awesome dance beat and most importantly not to sappy, because quite simply Darren and I arent a lovey dovey sappy couple.

Want some money saving options? Ofcourse you do!
  • Consider a musician who can play both the ceremony and the reception, one act will be cheaper than two,
  • Hire a great DJ instead of a live band, DJ's can play anything and don't need to take breaks, also paying for one person is cheaper than a 5 piece band
  • Ask you reception venue for any reccommendations
  • Plug your programmed ipod into the PA system
  • Any musical friends or relatives? There are lot of people out there who can sing
  • Hire a jukebox! These are fantastic
  • You could also ask tge DJ to double up at the MC

Bridesmaids Dresses

Today was a great day! Off I went with the bridal party down to my favourite bridal shop Pure Elegance Boutique in Moe and the girls tried on about 8 dresses and we all very luckily liked the same one the best! We have gone with a floor length chiffon option and I am sure the ladies are going to look simply amazing on the day, its a flattering style that would suit all body types and I hope everyone loves it on the day as well.

Check out http://www.pureelegancebridal.com.au/ if you want great service and fantastic prices

So when picking bridesmaids there are a few key details to remember what they will need:
- A dress
- Shoes
- Hair & Make-up
- A Bouquet
- A grommsman ofcourse
- A seat in the wedding car
- A gift often in the form of jewellery to be worn on the day
- And of course a spot at the rehearsal dinner, hens night and bridal shower

So is it usual for the bridesmaids to pay for their own dress, shoes and make-up, but remember the bride will foot the bill for the car spot, the bouquet and obviously the more bridesmaids you have, the more opinions you will recieve. I have had a number of posts about choosing bridesmaids, so head back and have a read if you'd like to see how i decided. But from my decision I can say I know I made the right choice, these girls have been there every step of the way and they have been the best friends to me the last few months too

I guess what I am saying is that you don't need a cast of thousands standing there beside you, you just need the girls that you love, trust and count on the most.

The Photobooth

Ahh the photobooth is an addition to the reception which I would absolutely LOVE to have but budget constraints unfortunately won't alllow it. Most companies provide props for the full effect, they also are usually fantstic quality images and mostly are personalised to the event. The only problem with them is the $$$. However don't get me wrong I don't think the price is unrealistic. Most companies drop and pick up the booth as well as leave an attendant to help incase things go wrong with the machine.

How does it work? Your friends and family, and hey even the bride and groom can get in there and give it a go, usually 6 photos are taken and printed out in 15-30 seconds for the users to take and share around. Most machines are also equipped to save all photos taken so that the bride and groom can et a copy on disk after the event! Not too bad really if you love pictures of everyone?

As I mentioned these are pretty expensive, think $1500-$2500 depending on your location. Want my money saving idea? I am going to set up a Photo Corner! I am going to leave my digital camera there, as I trust everyone at the event I don't think there will be any issues with it getting broken or stolen. I am also going to provide some props, I am thinking a blackboard, prehaps a photo frame, some funny glasses and whatever else I might be able to find at the $2 shop. It may not be as cool as the photo booth but I still think it is going to be a good way of doing it! I'm probably looking to spend $50 on props and then $50 again on printing the digital photos that I like, and $100 is looking a lot better to me than $2500 that it would cost to deliver to my country town.

Blingy Bouquets

The Bling Bouquet is in big time for 2012/2013! What is that I hear you asking? It is adding crystals, your favourite piece of jewellery, diamentes, anything that adds some extra bling to bouquet! And there are a number of florists doing this Australia Wide to give you bouquet some extra pizazz! Is this something you would consider?

I'm not really a fan of flowers, so I am pretty much just having them for the sake of having something to hold while walking down the aisle, of course I want them to look nice, but I would rather spend my money on other aspects of the wedding that are more important to me!

However if you are interested in the bling bouquet idea, check out the below sites and they may be able to help you on your way:
http://www.bouquetswithbling.com.au/
http://www.howdivine.com.au/store/114-bouquet-buckles-and-jewels

I am opting for a more traditional rose bouquet, Mine will be white and yellow roses, and the bridesmaids will just have white roses. Mine won't be quite as elegant as the below picture, but then I don't plan on keeping my bouquet, I will be throwing this one into the arms of a single lady at my big day. Who does plan on having a bouquet just to throw away? It was going to be an extra $80, which I wasn't interested in paying when I have a perfectly good bouquet myself to throw away.

Beach Wedding?

As most of you know I'm not having a beach wedding, but I came across this beautiful photo earlier today. If I was to have a beach wedding this is exactly the setting I would love, the colours reflect the ocean and the sky, simply amazing...

Ring, Ring

Is it just me or do wedding rings not quite have the same stigma as the engagement ring? Now-a-days most brides will have a diamond encrusted ring either white or yellow gold, usually matching a stunning engagement ring, but how often when someone says they have just gotten married do you turn around and say OMG show me the wedding ring!! Maybe its just me? But it's something I have never asked anyone :s

Things are changing with the new crew of brides to be, especially when it comes to engagement rings. No longer do brides opt for the standard solitaire yellow gold set, the numbers are increasingly leaning to white gold these days, with more and more going the princess or alternatively shaped cuts. Also the more popular and money concious choice to to buy the wedding ring/engagement ring set at the time. Now I know most women are thinking, as if the man will think of that? Well I got to pick my ring, and not even I thought of that!! Anyways, we spent a reasonable amount on my engagement ring at 3k, reasonable for us anyways, I know people who have spent as little as $50 and up to $25k. So I am pretty happy with mine, especially since I got it on special, marked down from $5k. To me anyways, it isn't about the clarity or cut, its about the reason why the ring was purchased. Because of love... and no Im not saying that someone who has a beautiful 300k ring is being showy, I'm just saying whether it is a burger ring or Kim K's engagement ring, it all came with the same thought? Hmm maybe Kim K wasn't the best example haha!

Anyways I have taken this same tack with buying my wedding ring, the local jeweller had a sale on, and I thought I might go have a look, see what they had, and if anything would suit, and I saw it there, perfectly inligned with diamonds in my engagement ring, 50% off! Then and there I knew that was the wedding ring, this jeweller also did not try and say, its only $300 you should spend more on your wedding ring, they said how lovely it suited, didn't try to upsell and I got my wedding ring for $150! Stoked.

On this same day I also picked out Darrens ring, he isnt going to wear his ring other than on the day, so we chose a ring worth $50 for him, something that will last long enough to pass down to our children should we ever have any. So all in all, both wedding rings $200! I am so happy with it, but how am I meant to last another 10 months without wearing it??

So what do you all think about hubby to be not wanting to wear a ring? Is this something you would be disappointed about? Not worried either way? I guess its not that important in my view, as I know he has never wanted to wear jewellery of any kind, not even a watch, but then I read an article last week about a lady in India divorcing her hubby cos he didn't update his facebook status. What do you think about that one?

Sit down? Stand up?

The newest great debate in the wedding world is whether or not the traditional multiple course sit down meal is still the way to go, or the new and more sociable cocktail finger food is the way of the world these days. I don't think one way is particularly better than the other, of course there are pro's and con's either way.

A laid back couple, wanting fun and to socialise in a party style wedding will opt for the cocktail theme every day of the week, this allows everybody to mingle the entire duration of the party, it of course stops the seating planning issue, especially when Aunt Jan doesn't like to be in the same room of Uncle Johnny, therefore the cocktail style means that everyone can socialise with whom they want and not be forced to make small talk with someone they dont particulary find interesting. My one recommendation with the cocktail style food, would be to ensure there is ample food, particulary if your event as most are is after 5, as people may not have time for a meal between the ceremony and reception. Making sure there is ample finger food ensures your guests stay happy and chirpy, and also "hopefully" will eliminate any one getting too drunk at the bar. I would opt for the cocktail stand up option if I was having a wedding at say midday with a reception to follow at 2pm.

As for the sit down, grandma and grandpa will certainly be happier with this option. This is possibly the only way to make sure the bride and groom actually get to talk to each other at the reception. However it does mean some extra planning, as mentioned above, try and sit people together who get along, or whom you believe personalities will suit if people haven't met, perhaps cousin Lucy is a hairdresser, who would be great on a table with your friend who is about to buy her own salon? I don't think you have to necessarily put all family members together, but this is up to the couple. My family gets along relatively well, so we have 4 tables of families, one for each side of our family tree. Just remember with a sit down style you don't have to have 5 courses, because think about how many people actually can eat this much?

My plan is to serve a stand up array of finger food for the first hour and a half of the reception, of a range of canapes fro fancy cheese and olive constructions to sausage rolls, hopefully finding a happy medium for everyone. We then are serving a main of roast lamb, pork, beef and roasted vegetables, with of course a vegetarian option for those who don't eat meat. We have also ditched the dessert and opted to serve our cake with berries and cream to the guests. Because whats the point in having a cake for 100 people and no one wants any because they have just had dessert? With this in mind our per head, including a 5 hour alcohol package is $75, which when compared to most places, certainly isn't priced bad at all!

So remember there is no right or wrong answer to whether or not you have a sit down or stand up menu, just make sure it suits you, and give you and your fiance the reception that you dreamt of!

Formal is OUT and Fun is IN

Today in the Sunday Herald Sun there was an article about how the formal traditional weddings are a thing of the past. Couples these days are moving towards more fun and personal weddings. This is something I have always being passionate about. I want a wedding that is reflective of my and Darrens personality, we are also pretty young to be getting married so I am looking at more of a party atmosphere.

Leading the new top trends lists were the below:

Lolly Buffets- See my previous post on candy bars if you'd like some info on this one!

Photo Booths- These are a great idea, something I would love to do, and will be blogging on later in this week.

Bling Bouquets- This is where brides add diamantes and mementos to there more traditional floral bouquet.

The Rings- White gold rings are more on the rise with the princess cut and pear cut gems leading the way! Also watch out on my next post regarding my engagement ring and matching wedding ring, which i have just purchased!!!

The Cake- Many couples are opting for the cup cake cakes, this is another trend that I am following, again look at my "cake dream" post to see the style cake that I am looking for.

Dinner- The sit down dinner is making way for a cocktail style reception with finger food! Again I have just chosen the recpetion meals and will have a post on this shortly!

and the big $$$ issue- The brides parents no longer foot the majority of the bill, with the couples opting to pay for the wedding themselves, meaning they get to make all the decisions!

The Candy Bar

So quite a while ago I got a quote on hiring a candy bar for the wedding, I have been a fan of the candy bar since seeing the idea in a bridal magazine a while ago. They are stylish, they go with the colour scheme, the jars are simply stunning and who can say no to lollies? Well not me anyways. However the quote for the candy bar was $3000! Yes $3000 to hire some jars, have someone set them up and fill them with lollies, slightly over-priced in my opinion.

However in saying that, money isn't always an issue for all, so I will reccomend the company as there customer service was exceptional, and they provided me with a lot of information when I asked for it, and also weren't pushy when I had to decline for financial reasons. http://www.candybuffet.com.au/ They have some amazing displays, which I am going to try and replicate on my own.

Step 1 I headed off to do some shopping for some jars, stop one was Kmart, I got 5 jars for $2 each! Thats $10 and I almost have as many jars in the above pictures. Then next stop was the local op shops where I found another 5 jars for $8. So thats the jars done for less than $20, great for the budget concious.

Step 2, wash them all in mums dishwasher haha! To give them an extra shine, and to add a bit of pizazz I will be tying some ribbon around each jar. Additionally with an engagement voucher I was able to find a stunning frame which I will be using as the Candy Bar sign! 15m of ribbon off eBay was $5 free postage from China, so far we are totally at $23, already better than the $3k quoted I must say.

Step 3, I will be using the provided table cloths at the reception venue to save some money, and also I have asked the venue to ensure that the candy is topped up as required.

Lastly I will be off to by the lollies, which I won't do until 3-4 weeks before the wedding. I plan on spending $100 on bulk lollies, I have already started researching online wholesalers and getting quotes from local companies. But for arguments sake, lets say I spend $200 on lollies, that brings us to a total of $223 a lot less than the quoted amount! I have added a picture below of the style I am going for, but think yellows and ivories for the lolly colours.

Winners Are Grinners

Well it's pretty safe to say that the last 24 hours have been good for me! I have landed a job, casual again of course but with the plan that it will go full time within the month, but i'll have more on that on Monday hopefully when I know more about the opportunity, I also very much enjoyed seeing my beloved boys in the black and white knock of Geelong in the Grand Final rematch, not as good as if we would have one back in October, but it goes a little way to relieving the pain, and also the most exciting part, WINNING our first game of netball, was a fantastic effort and a credit to the hard work the girls and in particular our coach had been putting in the last few months!

I guess what I am going to take from the last couple of days is that as lame as it sounds, Katy Perrys firework sums this up better than I ever will, "Maybe the reason all the doors are closed, is because you are waiting for the one that leads you down the perfect road" and I am a believer of everything happens for a reason. I have landed a job, well not just a job, a career, a future, at a company about 1km down the road from me, which considering this time last year I was travelling 115kms for work, I am pretty dam stoked about it.

Winning is really the best feeling, whether its a sporting game, a job, even a competition, anything that can give yourself that extra bit of confidence and pride is a good thing, because I think it then rolls over to other aspects of your life. I played by far my best ever game of netball today, to be fair it was my 7th ever proper game, but I've had a few mixed netball games in my belt too, and the reason is because I think I finally believed that I could do it, and the happiness of getting the job I think went a long way to helping that confidence. Life is always going to throw everything its got at you, and I think remembering the wins along the way helps with the things that may not have gone with how you would have liked.

Anyways I should do a bit of a flip back to the wedding now, considering that is what I am meant to be talking about afterall. I have booked our make up artist for the big day and also for the trial before the wedding. Her name is Lizi and can be found at Respect for Beauty in Koo Wee Rup and I can't wait to see what she can do, her portfolio is simply amazing. As you are all aware I am option for a cocktail party themed wedding, we are young and we want to have fun, so that's how I plan to have the wedding decided. I have provided some make-up examples below for the look that we will be going for! Hope you all like it!

The Honeymoon

So I am on a roll today with posting, so I figure why wait for tomorrow. Especially because I am so excited that I booked our Honeymoon on Wednesday to the Whitsundays, the beautiful Great Barrier Reef, I absolutely can't wait!

Hamilton Island must be one of the most beautiful places in the entire world. We are starting off at Airlie Beach for 4 nights, including a reef view tour out to do some snorkelling and also in a glass bottom boat. I have been snorkeling once before and the experience is amazing and I can't wait to do it again. Airlie Beach is going to be our fun part of the trip! We are thinking, nights out, dinners, drinks, getting out and exploring.

We are then heading over to the gorgeous Hamilton Island for 3 nights for some relaxtion and pampering. Daz has a day on the beautiful golf course, and I'll happily set up at a day spa and relax by the pool. Can March 2013 possible come any quicker!!!???

In saying that, I am sure March will come fast enough, particulary with "hopefully a new job", more wedding planning/finalising and the wedding of a best friend also! Bring it

The Cake Dream

Wedding Colour Schemes! Think Sunshine

Concentrate on what you have, not what you dont have

Ok so I have just realised I have been incredibly slack in my posting, and I actually haven't posted since getting the news that I didn't get the job that I had risked it all for, so I guess in a way its like a broken promise. I thought that it would work out, and honestly didn't really think through the consequences if it didn't.

Obviously it has affected me a little more than what it should have, I have been left feeling a little helpless, a little worthless and slightly devoid of direction. Of the past two months, I have actually spent my time almost in a state of depression, nothing to be overly concerned about, but for a number of reasons I stopped feeling like i deserved better, I stopped enjoying planning the wedding, and felt like maybe I had some sort of bad Karma surrounding me, causing things to keep going wrong for me.

But it has taken two things in the last few weeks to snap me back to reality. I am a good person, I have always worked hard and I am certainly worth more than sitting in front of a TV watching One Tree Hill or Glee to pass the hours by before Darren comes home from a day at work. Number 1, due to a falling out with a friend, I had been second guessing myself as a person, whether or not I treat people right, and when I think back through my life, I have always put other people first, what they wanted to do, and what they wanted me to do, whatever it was, I did it. And because of the selflessness I believe I was always a good friend to everyone whom I met. It took my cousin, a man that I will always look up to, he has been suffering from a serious illness for a long time now, and last week he told me that he had been given 6 months left to live. It opened my eyes, what if I was told tomorrow that I had 6 months to live, I certainly wouldn't spend it watching Glee and One Tree Hill and certainly wouldn't spend it worrying why someone who I thought was my best friend could just walk away, because I have so many other good things in my life to look forward too, many other friends to spend my time with.

Secondly, just today, in a much more positive way, a friend of mine inspired me to start writing my blog again, and she wouldn't have even known that she did it, all she did was give me the link to her own wedding blog, http://thethaibride.blogspot.com.au/ if you are interested. Writing this blog is good for me, its the best way to get all of my thoughts out into the world.

Today I am going to stop worrying about the things that I don' have, and instead focus on the things that I do have, and that is, I somewhat have a job....well I work maybe 10 days/nights a month, which is better than not working at all, I have 3 potential full time job prospects in the works, I have also been accepted in university at RMIT if I choose to return or defer, most importantly I have friends and family who would be there for me no matter what. I won't mention there names, but there has been a lot of support the last few weeks from 3 amazing girls in my life, my very special fiance and a boy who is absolutely my brother from another mother, and to all of you I say thank you, because you have all been my rocks and have helped me get my perspective back on focus.

I must say not working has allowed me to get a lot of wedding planning completed, but I won't start on that in this post. I think I will leave it for another day, mostly so it means that I will stop by again tomorrow to post again, for a sneak peak there will be details of the reception menu, the make-up and hair styles, there will also be bridesmaids dresses to come, the cake details, I have also completed seating charts, the music list, quite simply I have nearly done it all.
